Same gas, nine times the price. Europe's energy problem is gas, and America is selling it.

European gas (the Dutch TTF contract) settled at €79.52 a megawatt-hour on 18 September, about $26.76 per million BTU at the day's euro rate, and nearly triple its €28.57 on 2 January. US gas at Henry Hub settled at $2.91. Brent crude is $103.87, up 71% this year, after Iran attacked ships near the Strait of Hormuz on 10 September. Energy pushed euro-area inflation back up to 3.3% in August. Cheniere Energy, the biggest US gas exporter, is up 36% this year; Equinor, Norway's gas company, is up 80%. Germany's stock market is down 1% this year while the S&P 500 is up 11.5%.

in plain EnglishNatural gas heats homes, runs factories and makes electricity. America produces its own, so a unit of gas costs about three dollars here. Europe has to import most of its gas by pipeline or by ship, and this year the price there has nearly tripled to about nine times the American price. Oil is expensive everywhere because of the fighting around the Strait of Hormuz, but oil is the same price for everyone; gas is where Europe pays more. The gas Europe is buying increasingly comes from American export terminals, which is why the American exporters are among the year's best-performing shares while Germany's market is flat.
